Familiars (2002), is the first multiple completed by Kiki Smith in collaboration with the FWM. This woven wool coverlet features a composition of creatures great and small attending to a central female figure. The "familiars," or spirits said to be embodied in an animal and bound to the protection of a person, are purposefully printed on the wool coverlet as if to shelter the user.

Many of Kiki Smith's works explore the historical and spiritual connections between humans and animals and feature a wide array of creatures the artist sees as symbolic or significant including birds, wolves, deer, cats, owls, bats, mice and others from the context of religion, literature, and folklore. Singing Siren is one such creature. The sound element in the sculpture is by Donald Rubinstein and is triggered by both motion and light.

Owl and Pussycat, 2002
Pigment on cotton sateen, Liberty print fabrics 24 x 12 x 2 inches
Unlimited edition
Member Price: $202.50
Non-Member Price: $225.00
Designed like a traditional flip doll, this whimsical creature is a cat on one end and when its skirt is flipped over its head an owl is revealed, complete with little wings. The concept of the Owl and Pussycat flip doll draws from the 1871 nonsense poem about two unlikely sweethearts-an elegant owl and a beautiful cat by Edward Lear. Each doll is unique, made of hand sewn, silk-screened fabric designed by Smith.
