In support of her current exhibition at The Fabric Workshop and Museum (FWM), Monumental Cloth, The Flag We Should Know, artist and Amherst College professor Sonya Clark will join Dr. David Silkenat, Raising the White Flag author and senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, in a conversation about the history of truce and surrender in the American Civil War. Linking these events to a larger discussion of cultural and social history in America, connections will be drawn between themes of Clark’s exhibition and Dr. Silkenat’s new release (published by UNC Press). The discussion will be followed by a book signing with the author.

Sonya Clark has received numerous awards, including the James Renwick Alliance Distinguished Educator Award (2018), Anonymous Was A Woman Award (2016), ArtPrize Juried Grand Prize (co-winner, 2014), Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (2010 and 2011), and Pollock Krasner award. For 12 years, Clark served as a professor and chair of the Department of Craft and Material Studies at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond, Virginia. She is currently Professor of Art and the History of Art at Amherst College where she received an honorary doctorate in 2015.

David Silkenat is a senior lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of three books: Raising the White Flag: How Surrender Defined the American Civil War (2019), Driven from Home: North Carolina's Civil War Refugee Crisis (2015), and Moments of Despair: Suicide, Divorce, and Debt in Civil War Era North Carolina (2011). He is a two-time winner of the North Caroliniana Society Book Prize and serves as the Chair of the Scottish Association for the Study of America and on the editorial boards for the Journal of the Civil War Era and American Nineteenth Century History.
